The Complete Wig Care Guide
Your Luvme Hair wig is an investment in quality. With proper care, your human hair wig can last 1–3 years or more. Follow this comprehensive care guide to keep your wig looking beautiful.
Essential Wig Care Products
- Sulfate-free, moisturizing shampoo
- Deep conditioning mask or conditioner
- Leave-in conditioner or hair serum
- Heat protectant spray
- Wide-tooth comb or wig brush
- Wig stand or mannequin head
- Satin or silk wig bag for storage
How to Wash Your Human Hair Wig
- Detangle first: Before washing, gently detangle from ends to roots using a wide-tooth comb. Never start from the roots.
- Rinse with cool water: Hold the wig under cool running water from root to tip. Avoid hot water — it opens the hair cuticle and causes frizz.
- Shampoo gently: Apply a small amount of sulfate-free shampoo. Work it through the hair in a downward motion — never circular rubbing, which causes tangles.
- Rinse thoroughly: Rinse all shampoo out completely with cool water. Residue causes buildup and dulls the hair.
- Condition: Apply conditioner or deep conditioning mask from mid-length to ends. Leave for 5–10 minutes (or 20–30 min with a shower cap for a deep treatment).
- Final rinse: Rinse conditioner completely with cool water.
- Pat dry: Gently pat the hair with a soft microfiber towel. Never rub or wring — this causes breakage and frizz.
- Air dry: Place on a wig stand and allow to air dry. If blow-drying, use a diffuser on low heat.
Wash frequency: Every 7–14 days with regular wear, or after every 15–20 wears.
Washing by Texture
Straight Wigs
Easiest to maintain. After washing and air-drying, use a flat iron at 300–350°F to restore the straight style if needed. Use heat protectant every time.
Body Wave & Loose Wave Wigs
After washing, scrunch the hair upward while wet to encourage the wave pattern. Air dry for best results. Avoid brushing when dry — use your fingers to separate waves.
Deep Wave & Curly Wigs
Apply leave-in conditioner while damp and scrunch in. Diffuse dry or air dry. Use a curl refresher spray between washes to revive the pattern. Never brush dry — always detangle wet with a wide-tooth comb.
Kinky Straight / Yaki Wigs
Deep condition regularly — this texture tends to dry out faster. Use a lightweight oil (argan or jojoba) to add shine and moisture. Moisturize regularly to maintain the texture.
Heat Styling Guide
| Tool | Recommended Temperature | Max Temperature |
|---|---|---|
| Flat Iron | 280–330°F (138–165°C) | 380°F (193°C) |
| Curling Iron / Wand | 300–350°F (150–176°C) | 380°F (193°C) |
| Blow Dryer | Low to medium heat | Medium heat only |
Always use a heat protectant spray before any heat styling. Excessive heat is the #1 cause of premature wig deterioration.
Daily & Nighttime Care
- Daily: Use a wide-tooth comb or wig brush to gently detangle. Apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner or hair serum to maintain moisture and shine.
- Before bed: Remove your wig and place it on a wig stand. Alternatively, braid the hair loosely and secure in a satin bonnet or on a silk pillowcase.
- Never sleep in a wig on a regular basis — friction from pillows causes tangling and matting at the nape.
Storage Instructions
- Store on a wig stand or mannequin head to maintain the shape
- If storing long-term, place in a satin bag in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
- Never store in a plastic bag — this traps moisture and causes mildew
- Keep away from dust, heat, and humidity
Restoring Curl or Wave Pattern
If your wave or curl pattern has loosened over time:
- Wash and condition thoroughly
- While hair is still damp, apply a curl-enhancing cream or mousse
- Braid or twist sections and let air dry completely
- Unravel the braids/twists when fully dry and shake out gently
When to Replace Your Wig
Signs it may be time for a new wig: excessive shedding from the weft; matting that cannot be detangled; lace that is stretched, torn, or no longer lies flat; hair that looks dull, dry, or straw-like despite conditioning; knots in the lace that are visibly bleached out. With proper care, Luvme Hair wigs last 1–3 years.
